Dar Es Salaam – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Migrations Agency joined the Government and the International Community in the United Republic of Tanzania to commemorate the International Migrants Day in Dar Es Salaam today, the 18 December 2019.

The event took place at the Immigration Head Quarters (HQ) in Dar Es Salaam.

The Government was represented in the event by Honorable Engineer Mr Hamad Masauni, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs who was the Guest of Honor, Commissioner General of Immigration (CGI), Dr Ms. Anna Makakala and Representatives from all other Departments of the Ministry of Home Affairs i.e. Police, Refugees, Prison, NIDA as well as RITA.

Dr Qasim Sufi, the IOM Chief of Mission to the United Republic of Tanzania and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator (RC) and Designated Official (DO) for Security a.i. led the ONEUN country team that included the Deputy Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr George Kuchio and other colleagues from the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and other 15 UN Resident Agencies in the country in the event.

The “theme” of this years’ (2019) International Migrants Day is: “Social Cohesion: Recognizing Migration is a Benefit that Works for All”.

Engineer Masauni, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs said the Government recognizes and supports this year’s theme of the International Migrants Day “Social Cohesion: Recognizing Migration is a Benefit that Works for All” and at the same thanked the work of IOM as the United Migration Agency in the country.

Dr Anna Makakala, the Commissioner General of Immigration (CGI) also thanked the IOM technical and material assistance to her department within the Ministry of Home Affairs and requested for further collaboration with both IOM and other agencies for the sake of promoting safe and regular migration in Tanzania and beyond.
