Migrant Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) successfully installed at Kabanga OSBP
Tanzanian immigration officials successfully installed the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at Kabanga One Stop Border Post (OSBP) at the Tanzanian-Burundian border. This was the result of the excellent partnership and close cooperation between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Tanzania Immigration Services Department (TISD). IOM, the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, has invested in developing Border Management Information Systems (BMIS) to respond to the challenges of border and migration management globally. MIDAS is an IOM-developed Border Management Information System, designed to strengthen immigration and border management, that is currently operating in more than 19 African countries.
MIDAS enables the collection, storage and processing of traveller data. It enables speedy and accurate identity checks, facilitating the secure exchange of information between border posts. MIDAS is now fully operational on the Tanzanian side of the OSBP, which is equipped with seven work stations, each containing a computer, fingerprint- and passport scanner and a webcam, all provided by IOM.
Capacity building for border and immigration officials forms a central feature of IOM Tanzania’s work. Since 2011 has delivered trainings to immigration and border officials, focusing on end-users, administrators, installers, as well as training skilled trainers (TOT). Through these trainings, IOM Tanzania has built the capacity of the TISD to allow them to effectively install and implement Border Management Information Systems, as is illustrated by the successful installation of MIDAS at Kabanga OSBP.
