Tanzania – The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through its Ministry of Home Affairs - Department of Immigration Services (TISD) has been working to address migration-management issues in the country under the project titled “Migrants Registration Support for Tanzania (MiREG)”, a project implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency, with the financial support of the United Kingdom (UK) Government.

The project aims at enhancing Government’s capacity to address irregular migration and promotes humane, orderly and rights-based migration and border management by contributing to Government efforts in status determination processes in Tanzania.

In preparation for the upcoming migrants’ registration exercise that, will take place in 11 border regions throughout the country, IOM in collaboration with TISD continue to carry out field missions to project targeted regions. The implementation of the project is informed by the Comprehensive Migration Management Strategy in Tanzania II, known as COMMIST II.

Between 24 August to 8 September 2020, a team of 4 staff from IOM and TISD visited three regions bordering Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia and Burundi, namely Rukwa, Tabora and Geita. The IOM team was led by the Project Assistant, Ms Valda Chali while the TISD team was led by Mr. Aziz Kirondomara.

The IOM and TISD teams have received warm welcome by the authorities, including the Commissioners and Immigration Officers both at Regional and District levels. Regional Commissioners endorsed the project and promised maximum cooperation to the project, while expressing their gratitude as they acknowledge the importance of the exercise for the benefit of the United Republic of Tanzania and the migrant population.

During this visit the team leader from TISD Mr. Aziz Kirondomara handed over COMMIST II documents to all Regional Commissioners, District Commissioners, Regional Immigration Officers and District Immigration Officers.

"While the project is important for both GoT & IOM, it is particularly beneficial for the Migrants because if they fulfill the requirements may acquire better status in the country namely work permit or citizenship on case by cases in the country, said Dr Qasim Sufi, IOM Chief of Mission (CoM) in the United Republic of Tanzania.
