Zanzibar, 23 July 2020 -

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations (UN) Migration Agency organized an interactive dialogue with: Government of the United Republic of Tanzania represented by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons (A-TiP) Secretariat and other frontline stakeholders on Anti-Trafficking in Persons in Zanzibar .

Participants in the interactive dialogue included stakeholders from Government i.e. varies ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organizations and members of the international community.

The primary objective of the dialogue was to discuss on issues related to the implementation of activities for the Anti-Trafficking in Persons in Zanzibar namely strengthened prevention, protection and response services to victims of trafficking.

As the result, the interactive dialogue has provided insights on shared responsibilities among stakeholders to play their role in eradicating Trafficking in Persons (TiP) in the country and challenges facing both the Anti-Trafficking Secretariat as well as other stakeholders in the implementation process of their activities during the current reporting year, 2019/2020.

At the end of the interactive dialogue, participants came out with a Statement of Action to be presented in the National Dialogue in Dar es Salaam on 27 July 2020 and at the High Level Meeting set to take place in Dodoma at the climax of the Commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July 2020.

The interactive dialogue conducted was part of activities organized by IOM in anticipation of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2020 and it fully embraces this year’s national theme: “Committed to the Cause - Working on the Frontline to End Human Trafficking”.

The 2020 theme for the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (TiP) focuses on the first responders to human trafficking; these are the people who work in different sectors identifying, supporting, counselling and seeking justice for victims of trafficking and challenging the impunity of the traffickers.

IOM Tanzania promotes prevention and response to human trafficking in line with:

1. Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act 2008,
2. National Anti-Trafficking in Persons Action Plan (2018 – 2021) and
3. National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children (NPA VAWC) 2017-2022

IOM is and active member of the UN Joint Programmes under the pillar “Ending Violence Against Women and Children”, in both Mainland (Kigoma) and Zanzibar, which falls under the framework of the UN Development Assistance Plan Two (UNDAP II) covering the period 2017-2021.

Activities implemented under the project include: provision of direct and specialized assistance to victims of trafficking (VoT) in persons through shelter assistance, capacity building of frontline workers, community dialogue and awareness raising activities in the United Republic of Tanzania.

In the implementation of project activities, IOM works with both Government and other partners to boost the efforts on child protection, protection for VoT and survivors of violence, and systems aimed at upholding the rights of workers.
