IOM and Government Conducted Training on Tip in Zanzibar
Zanzibar - The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Migration Agency in the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Social Welfare, Elderly, Gender and Children of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, conducted a three-day roll-out training to Social Welfare and Women and Children staff on the addressing Trafficking in Persons (TiP) and provision of support services to the Victims of Trafficking (VoT) in person and Survivors of Violence (SoV) in Zanzibar.
The training contributes to Pillar three of the Zanzibar Joint Programme (Ending “Violence Against Women and Children”, VAWC ) which falls under the United Nations Assistance Development Plan II (UNDAP II) and is in line with the National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children 2017-2022 in Zanzibar.
27 participants (25 from Unguja and 2 from Pemba) from the Department of Social Welfare and the Women and Children Department participated in the three day training.
The training has:
- contributed into the capacitation of Social Welfare and Women and Children Department staff with knowledge in identification of victims of TiP through different indicators,
- imparted knowledge and raised awareness in Zanzibar on the concept of child trafficking as a form of violence against children,
- created awareness on the National Guidelines for establishment and management of safe house for the victims of TiP and SoV, and
- gave the opportunity for stakeholders to collaborate on protection, assistance and referral services for victims of trafficking and other forms of violence against women and children.
While officiating the training, the Guest of Honour, Ms. Abeida Rashid said “we are among the key stakeholders in fighting against trafficking in persons.” “Social Welfare and Women and Children Department staff have to apply the knowledge acquired from the training and disseminate it to their fellow colleagues and neighbours in society as a means of raising awareness, Ms Rashid also urged and thanked IOM for its support to the Revolutionary Government in Zanzibar in addressing Trafficking in Persons and other forms of violence in Zanzibar”.
