5-Day Session on the Review and Update of the Guidelines for Establishment and Management of Safe Houses in Zanzibar

Zanzibar - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Tanzania, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Empowerment, Elder, Women and Children of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, facilitated the Review and Update of the Guidelines for Establishment and Management of Safe Houses in Zanzibar.

The technical review activity engaged a total of 10 experts from the Department of Elders and Social Welfares, Department of Planning and Research from the Ministry of Labour, Empowerment, Elders, Women and Children, Department of Women and Children,  the Government Advocate, members of the Anti-Trafficking Secretariat and the Department of Social Welfare Mainland.

The Guidelines specifically applies to Establishment and Management of Safe Houses in Zanzibar, as part of support to the efforts of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar which has developed a five-year National Plan of Action to End Violence against Women and Children (2017/2018 – 2021/2022). The plan is comprehensive, embraces the evidence-based programming and focuses on the most vulnerable, including victims of trafficking in persons.

The technical review activity follows a request from Ministry of Labour, Empowerment, Elders, Women and Children, of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and responds to the request of the Director of Elders and Social Welfare with the aims to Provide the clear requirements for establishment and management of Safe Houses for   victims/ survivors  of all forms of  violence including Trafficking in Person.   

Furthermore, IOM in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Empowerment, Elders, Women and Children of Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar will facilitate the review and dissemination of the Guidelines for Establishment and Management of Safe Houses in Zanzibar to the key stakeholders. “I thank IOM Tanzania for their support in assisting the Government to review and update the Guidelines for the establishment and management of safe houses in Zanzibar which will set out the standards procedures for the establishment and management of safe houses in Zanzibar.” Said the Director of Elders and Social Welfare, who attended the event.
