IOM, UN PARTNERS ASSIST THE GOVERNMENT TO MANAGE MIGRATION IN TANZANIA

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nation’s (UN) Migration Agency organized a two days’ workshop on Mixed Migration and International Migration Law from 10 to 11 September 2019 at the IOM African Capacity Building Centre (ACBC) in Moshi.

The workshop was facilitated by IOM together with the United Nations Refugees’ Agency (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

It brought together 20 mid-level managers from Refugees, Immigration Services and Police Departments as well as the National Identification Authority (NIDA).

On 17 and 18 of September 2019, the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with IOM, and with the support of the United States Department of State Bureau for Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM), hosted the 9th Regional Technical Meeting (RTM) on Mixed Migration in the East and Horn of Africa region.

Countries agreed to strengthen migrant protection, migration data management and whole of government approach on migration management using national coordination mechanisms on migration (NCMs).

Geneva, Switzerland – IOM’s African Capacity Building Centre (IOM ACBC) celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Geneva on Friday September 13th, 2019.

The centre used the occasion to also launch one of its latest products and an important tool in Migration Management especially for Developing Countries, the Passport Examination Procedure Mobile Application (PEPM II App).

Kigoma, Tanzania: The United Nations (UN) Migration Agency, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) conducted a four-days training workshop on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Vulnerable Migrants and Ethical Border Practices together with Ministries of Home Affairs (Immigration Service Boarder and Control Management) and Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (Social Welfare Department) from 27 to 30 August 2019 in Kigoma region.

Dr Michelle Weinberg from the Programme Support Unit of the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) from CDC, Atlanta, GA, USA and Dr Luis Ortega, the Director of CDC Africa Field Programmes visited the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) facilities in IOM Makere Processing Centre and Kasulu Transit Centre on 20 August and 21nd August 2019 respectively.

The CDC team was accompanied by Dr Marwan Naoum, the IOM Regional Health Assessment Coordinator for Africa and Dr Amin Farah, the IOM Regional Vaccination Coordinator from IOM Nairobi, Kenya.

The United States Resettlement Admission Programme (USRAP) conducted training for Movement Operations Staff in IOM Tanzania from 24 July to 01 August 2019.

The training that took place in IOM offices in Kasulu and Dar Es Salaam focused on three very important thematic areas within the IOM movement operations i.e.:

The African Union (AU) Labour Migration Advisory Committee (LMAC) carried out an assessment mission to the East Africa Community (EAC) in Arusha from 14-15 August 2019.

The major objective of the mission was to understand and share experiences on policies, legal and institutional frameworks and legal instruments regulating labour migration management within and beyond the EAC.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations (UN) Migration Agency in collaboration with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania represented by the Committee for Anti Trafficking in Persons (TiP) under the Ministry of Home Affairs commemorated the World Day Against TiP on 30th July 2019 at Mnazi Mmoja ground in Dar es Salaam. The commemoration event was preceded by National Dialogue Activity on TiP on 29th July in Dar es salaam.

The United High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative, Ms. Chansa Kapaya and the Director of the Department of Refugees in Tanzania, Mr Sudi Exon Mwakibasi visited IOM Makere Processing Centre on 25 July 2019.

The objective of their visit to the IOM Makere Processing Centre was to monitor activities carried out by the International Organization of Migration (IOM) and the other resettlement programme partners in the centre.
